CERB DEBT

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is issuing collection letters demanding repayment from people who received too much Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) during the COVID-19 ordeal or who received it but shouldn’t have.

One of the people we are assisting with a consumer proposal received a $22,000 demand letter from CRA.  Her stress level shot up after that.  When she got in touch with us, we contacted CRA.  Our Insolvency Team sorted out the status and, because of our intervention, CRA confirmed that the CERB debt is captured by her proposal and she doesn’t have to pay it.  When we confirmed that to her, she was relieved, to say the least.

If you are faced with overwhelming debt that includes CRA debt, get in touch with us.  CRA has no special status in a bankruptcy or proposal – it is subject to the same rules as other creditors – and CERB and most other tax debt are extinguished by the filing of a proposal or bankruptcy. You may not need to take those steps, but if your debt obligations are stressing you out, you need information.  And we can help to provide that.
